In the hustle of daily
life, we often struggle to discern truth from falsehood, especially when the
voices around us distort or deny the very foundation of our faith: Jesus
Christ. The Apostle John’s words in 1 John 2:22-28 come as both a warm embrace
and a firm hand, reminding us where to turn in moments of confusion and doubt.
He calls us back to the truth, to the simplicity of the Gospel, and most
importantly, to abide in Christ. To abide means to remain, to dwell, to find
our home in Him, a profound invitation to rest in God’s faithfulness and love.
This First Letter of
John was written during a time of crisis in the early Christian community.
False teachers, referred to as antichrists, had arisen, denying key truths
about Jesus Christ, particularly His divinity and humanity. These heresies
threatened the faith of believers and disrupted their unity.
John, with the heart of
a loving shepherd, addresses his audience tenderly, calling them “little
children.” His pastoral and repetitive style emphasizes core themes: truth,
love, and abiding in God. His message is clear: believers must hold fast to the
truth of Christ, live in love, and remain steadfast in their faith, drawing
strength from the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Reflection on 1 John
2:22-28
John’s words resonate
with the urgency of a spiritual father protecting his children from deceit. In
verse 22, he boldly confronts those who deny Jesus as the Christ, underscoring
that the acknowledgment of Christ is foundational to our relationship with God:
“Anyone who denies the Son does not have the Father” (v. 23). This is
not merely doctrine, it is the lifeline of our faith.
John’s exhortation in
verse 24 is both tender and powerful: “Let what you heard from the beginning
abide in you.” He calls us to return to the simplicity and purity of the
Gospel. In the noise of modern life, how often do we lose sight of the
transformative truth we first believed? Yet here is our call: to let that truth
take root deeply in our hearts, shaping our thoughts, words, and actions.
Abiding in the Anointing
John assures us that we
are not alone in this journey. The Holy Spirit, the anointing we received,
teaches us all things and empowers us to remain faithful. This is a call to
intimacy, a daily walk with the living Christ. To abide is to dwell,
rest, and remain rooted in His love and truth. Jesus promised us the Holy
Spirit to guide us into all truth, and this anointing enables us to persevere
in faith.
In verse 28, John
becomes deeply personal: “And now, little children, abide in Him, so that
when He appears we may have confidence and not shrink from Him in shame at His
coming.” This is not a message of fear but of hope. Imagine standing before
Christ with joyful confidence, knowing you have lived a life faithful to Him.
Abiding in Christ is not about perfection but about perseverance, relying on
His grace to sustain us.
A Personal Call
This passage invites us
to examine our hearts. Have distractions, doubts, or discouragements pulled us
away from the truth? Are we abiding in Christ, allowing His Spirit to guide us?
Or are we trying to navigate life on our own strength?
John’s encouragement
reminds us of God’s unchanging faithfulness. The same Spirit who anointed us at
baptism continues to work in us, drawing us closer to Christ. In a world full
of deception, we are called to stand firm in truth, not with arrogance but with
humble assurance in the One who is Truth itself. As Jesus said, “God is
spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John
4:24).
As we begin this new
year, let us commit ourselves to daily prayer, spending time with Jesus and
allowing His Word to dwell richly in our hearts. Prayer is our lifeline,
keeping us connected to Him and helping us remain rooted in His love and truth.
Let us also dedicate
ourselves to regular reflection on the Word of God, guided by the Holy Spirit,
to deepen our faith and stand firm against false doctrines that may challenge
us. The Spirit will strengthen and enlighten us, helping us to hold fast to the
truth revealed in Christ.
This journey is not one
we undertake alone. Let us embrace the gift of community, working closely with
fellow believers in Christ. Together, we can grow in faith and love, supporting
and encouraging one another as we walk with the Lord throughout this year.
Let us
Pray :
Lord Jesus Christ, You
are the way, the truth, and the life. In a world full of lies and distractions,
help me to abide in You. Teach me to rest in Your love, to be guided by Your
Spirit, and to hold fast to the truth that You are the Christ, the Son of the
living God. May Your anointing in me bear fruit in holiness, courage, and
unwavering hope, so that when You appear, I may stand with confidence and joy.
Amen.🙏🙏🙏
