Meaning of the name of Jesus
Today, the holy mother Church invites us to celebrate the Holy Name of Jesus. The name Jesus
comes from the Hebrew name Yeshua, meaning “The Lord saves” or “God is
salvation.” This name encapsulates His mission and identity as the Savior of
humanity. As the angel declared to Joseph, “You shall call his name Jesus,
for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). His name is
not just a title but a declaration of God’s saving work, made manifest through
Christ.
In biblical tradition, names of people often carry profound significance, reflecting a person's identity and mission. The name Jesus, meaning "The Lord Saves", reveals his role as Savior. Calling upon His name is an act faith in His power to redeem and transform lives. The disciples of Jesus, empowered by His name, preached the Gospel, performed miracles, and bored witness to the saving power inherent in His name, testifying to its transformative and life-giving impact on the world.
Power of the Name of Jesus in Scripture
The New Testament
repeatedly emphasizes the miraculous power of invoking the name of Jesus. His
name is not only a source of salvation but also a conduit for divine healing,
deliverance, and victory over evil. Among the key examples, we can mention the
following:
- Healing the Sick: In the Acts of the Apostles,
Peter declares to a crippled man, “In the name of Jesus Christ of
Nazareth, rise up and walk” (Acts 3:6). Immediately, the man is
healed, demonstrating that Jesus’ name carries the power to restore
physical and spiritual well-being.
- Casting Out Demons: Jesus Himself gives His
disciples the authority to cast out demons in His name. “In my name they
will drive out demons” (Mark 16:17). The Apostles, empowered by His name,
proclaim victory over evil forces.
- Salvation: Peter boldly proclaims, “There is salvation in no one else, for
there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be
saved” (Acts 4:12). The name of Jesus is the gateway to eternal life
and reconciliation with God.
These examples reveal
that the name of Jesus is not just a word but a revelation of His authority and
divine presence. We recall that after his Resurrection Jesus said: “All
authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit.”, (Matthew 28:18). As a matter of fact, to call upon
His name is to place trust in His power and mission.
Living
in the Power of His Name : The epistle of John reminds us that
Jesus’ name transforms us into children of God: “See what love the
Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are”
(1 John 3:1). Living under the banner of His name means striving for
righteousness, purity, and holiness, as “everyone who has this hope in him
purifies himself, as he is pure” (1 John 3:3).
Moreover, the name of
Jesus is a source of protection and guidance in the Christian life. Jesus
Himself invites us to pray in His name: “If you ask anything in my name, I
will do it” (John 14:13–14). This promise assures us that invoking His name
is a way to align our lives with His will and receive grace.
Message
for us Celebrating the Feast: As we celebrate the Holy
Name of Jesus, lets meditate and reflect on these three realities:
The Saving Name: The
name of Jesus is a constant reminder that God’s love is active and present. By
honoring His name, we renew our faith in His power to save us from sin and
despair.
The Healing Name: We
are reminded of the countless healings performed in the name of Jesus.
Celebrating this feast encourages us to trust in the power of His name for our
own healing, of personal, emotional, psychological, and collective wounds, especially
for the healing of the world.
The Victorious Name:
Jesus’ name triumphs over sin, death, and evil. Calling on His name equips us
to face life’s challenges with confidence in His victory.
Let’s live by His Name: As we
celebrate the Holy Name of Jesus, let us renew our reverence for His
name and embrace its power in our lives. Just as the Apostles invoked His
name to heal, cast out demons, and proclaim salvation, so too are we called to
live and act in the name of Jesus.
Let His name be on our
lips in prayer, our hearts in worship, and our lives in witness. May the name
of Jesus continue to bring salvation, healing, and hope to the world. “At the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the
earth” (Philippians 2:10).
Prayer to the Holy Name
of Jesus
Lord Jesus,
Your name is salvation, healing, and hope.
In Your name, the sick are healed, the oppressed are set free,
and hearts are restored to God.
Teach us to honor and trust in
Your Holy Name.
May it be always on our lips in prayer,
our hearts in faith, and our lives in witness.
Help us to walk in righteousness and purity,
reflecting Your love and power to the world.
At Your name, every knee shall
bow,
and every tongue confess that You are Lord. May all forces of darkness, visible
and invisible, fighting against us bow down before your name.
Jesus, we trust in You! Amen.🙏🙏🙏
