The story of Joseph teaches us a powerful lesson about the dangers of jealousy and the power of forgiveness. It shows how even families can be torn apart by envy and hatred. Seeds of Jealousy is really a terrible thing; we should not allow it to be sown in our hearts.  In the book of Genesis 37: 3-28, we learn about Joseph, a young man favored by his father Jacob. The text said that "they (His brothers) hated him, so much that they would not greet him". The special love Jacob had for Joseph sparked jealousy in his brother's heart, who couldn't stand to see him succeed. So, gradually, their hearts were consumed by envy, their jealousy grew so strong that they eventually plot against their own flesh and blood and finally sold him into slavery. This act of betrayal against their own brother highlights a sad truth: family bonds are not always strong enough to overcome jealousy and resentment. Today’s Gospel builds upon the miracle of Jesus feeding roughly 4,000 people with seven loaves and a few fish. At the end of this mission, Jesus and His disciples entered a boat and sailed to the other side of the river. Now, imagine being in this boat with Jesus, crossing the river, when the realization hits: we forgot the bread. The panic can easily escalate; whispers switching into heated arguments. Beneath the surface of this forgotten bread lies a deeper message, one that is profoundly relevant to us Christians living in an often-changing seas of modern life. Jesus warns of the “ leaven of the Pharisees and Herod”. Leaven, used for baking bread, can symbolize both growth and corruption (fermentation). The Pharisees represent the religious authority while Herod represents the political powers. Brothers and sisters in Christ, today’s Gospel paints a poignant picture of one the difficulties Jesus encountered in his earthly ministry. In Mark 8:11-13, we see the Pharisees, who despite witnessing Jesus’ mighty acts, demand a “sign from heaven.” This scene resonates deeply with our own human condition, the constant yearning for the extraordinary, the spectacular proof of God’s presence in our often-chaotic world. Yet, Jesus’ response challenges us to a deeper understanding, inviting us to look beyond the surface of realities and see the quiet miracles unfolding around us every day. Remember, the Pharisees had already witnessed incredible demonstrations of God’s power through Jesus. He had expelled demons, healed the sick, and a paralytic, cleansed a leper, and brought back to life the dead, in short, Jesus had restored many lives. Brothers and sisters in Christ, today's Gospel, Mark 1:40-45, resonates deeply with our world, where isolation and exclusion cast long shadows on human relations. In the time of Jesus, leprosy was considered as consequence of one’s sin. In the first reading, we all heard how lepers were treated: deemed unclean they were ostracized. We can imagine how difficult it was for them. They were to stay away from the community until their healing which was to be ascertained by the priest. The first things that strikes one’s attentions is the courage of this leper. He approaches Jesus. He kneels down before Jesus, thus expresses a profound humility, and then utters words with desperation, “ If you wish, you can make me clean ”.  Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, here lies the essence of our faith: acknowledging our vulnerability before God, being humility before Him, surrendering to God's will, and expressing unwavering faith in the healing power of Jesus.
